Successful Launch of the VöV and Swissrail Mentoring Programme

With their joint mentoring programme, the Association of Public Transport (VöV) and Swissrail are sending a strong signal in support of diversity and the targeted promotion of emerging female talent within the public transport sector.

Around 40 mentors and mentees gathered on the Swissrail terrace for the launch of the new programme. In beautiful weather and with a stunning view of the Alps, the speed-dating session provided an opportunity to get to know one another, exchange experiences and expectations, and lay the foundations for rewarding mentoring partnerships.

This pilot project offers young professionals the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with senior industry leaders over the course of one year. The programme focuses on personal growth, knowledge and experience transfer, leadership development for future roles, and support in overcoming professional challenges. We are convinced that this cross-hierarchical exchange is enriching for everyone involved. Diversity is a widely discussed topic within the industry, and both VöV and Swissrail are committed to actively driving cultural change. Raising awareness is important, but lasting change also requires concrete solutions. This is precisely where the programme aims to make a difference by connecting emerging talent with experienced industry experts and leaders. In doing so, it actively strengthens diversity and equal opportunities within public transport. At the same time, it creates valuable exchanges across generations and career stages, an initiative that has been very well received by all participants.

At the launch event, Christine Maier, Director of Verkehrsbetriebe Biel, and Marie Icardo, Managing Director Switzerland at Alstom, shared their personal mentoring experiences. Both have first-hand experience as mentees and mentors. They spoke about the impact mentoring has had on their own careers and how important it is for them to pass these experiences on to the next generation. Their message was clear: mentoring creates value for both sides. While mentees gain guidance, inspiration and new perspectives, mentors receive valuable insights into the expectations, needs and viewpoints of the younger generation.

For those who were unable to attend in person, an additional digital format was also offered and has since successfully commenced.

We wish all mentoring pairs a successful start, inspiring conversations and many rewarding experiences throughout their shared journey.

Interested mentees and mentors are welcome to contact swissrail@swissrail.com to be considered for the next edition of the programme next year.
